Understanding the Ten Commandments Versions

Why the Differences?

You might notice that different religious traditions (Jewish, Catholic, various Protestant denominations) number or group the Ten Commandments in slightly different ways. While the core commandments found in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 are largely consistent across these traditions, the variations in presentation typically arise from how the original texts were divided and interpreted for catechetical (teaching) or liturgical (worship) purposes.

For example, some traditions combine what others consider two separate commandments regarding "no other gods" and "not making idols." Similarly, the commandments against coveting are sometimes presented as a single commandment or split into two distinct commandments (e.g., coveting a neighbor's wife versus coveting a neighbor's goods).

Does it Matter?

These numbering differences do not usually reflect major disagreements on the moral and spiritual importance of the commandments themselves. Instead, they are often matters of historical tradition and emphasis.

At Bible Doctrine Academy, we believe that understanding such historical and textual nuances helps build a stronger, more informed faith. It's not about causing confusion, but about appreciating the depth of scripture and how it has been understood through time. This kind of critical thinking and accessible theology is what we aim to foster, helping to liberate individuals from doctrinal confusion by providing clear, sound teaching.
